The Wyche Way - Booking For Coach Now Open

Saturday 31 Mar 2018 - Saturday 29 Sep 2018

Our chosen trail for 2018 is the Wyche Way; almost 80 miles between Kington and Broadway which happens to link the Herefordshire trail with the Cotswold Way thereby forming a continuity with the trails we have completed in 2015, 2016 and 2017. There are 7 sections, each of between 10-12 miles with one section at almost 14 miles. As before, the bus transport meeting point will be the Countryside Centre for 5 of the 7 sections but with Malvern being the meeting point for sections 4 and 5. These walks will take place on the last Saturday in the months March to September 2018.

We have had a very positive response with over 30 members committed to the first walk. So we've arranged a bigger bus. Which means there are still places available.

To avoid disappointment BOOK and PAY early to guarantee your place on the coach.

Booking for the coach is open for the first three sections, 31st March, 28th April, 26th May of the Wyche Way.

The meeting point for the coach for these sections is the Worcester Countryside Centre Worcester. The time has been rearranged to 08:30am to ensure we have space to park and leave before the Saturday running clubs meet at the same location.

Please send your name, which walk when you are booking to Heather Fraser and pay £10 per person, per walk to Worcester Ramblers Bank Account.

Please quote reference - surname/Wyche when paying directly into the Worcester Ramblers Bank Account.

If you do not have the bank details please contact the Treasurer (Marian Carr).

The arrangements for the later sections will follow in due course.

The Wyche Way

Brixham - 5 days 4 nights

Monday 23 Apr 2018 - Friday 27 Apr 2018

We have been offered a really good deal if the Group would like to go & it can be booked by 12th May.

The Site is Park Holidays Chalets Brixham, a 15 - 20 minute walk into town - 0.9 miles

Riviera bay enjoys stunning views out to sea and boasts some of our best facilities, the perfect combination for a traditional family holiday park.

'West is best" as they say and Riviera Bay is our most westerly park. Fantastic facilities including a great indoor pool, large entertainment venue, and popular restaurant help to make Riviera Bay the first choice for family fun holidays. And of course, you'll want to get out and explore the many attractions when you stay in this area. The mild climate means t-shirts and shorts for most of the season (sorry, no ""knobbly knees"" competitions)  our entertainment is bang up to date, and well worth the trip just for the live shows alone!

There's far too many places to go and attractions to visit, but that's where we come in. Tell us what you love to do - and our teams on the park will recommend some great days out.

Please note that Riviera Bay occupies a stunning cliff top location with lovely views over St Mary’s Bay. A pebbly beach is accessible from the park via a coastal path however the gradient is steep and not suitable for the elderly or infirm.

The Site is Situated so that we can walk directly onto the Coastal Path - The walks are likely to be from the below list & may be 2 walks a day subject to The Group.

  • Walk 1) 7 Miles on  Dartmoor from Hayter - Suitable for All
  • Walk 2) 8 Miles from the Site to Berry Head - Suitable for all a few Hills
  • Walk 2b) 9 Miles - From Site to Kingswear - HARD Walk - Coastal Path big ups & Downs - linear
  • Walk 3)  11 Miles Kingswear to Kingswear Via 2 Ferrys

Whitby Walking Week

Saturday 07 Jul 2018 - Saturday 14 Jul 2018

A chance to walk the coast, valleys and moors of North Yorkshire. The proposed programme will be linear walks and one circular walk. All walks are hilly and range from a tough 14.5 miles down to an easy 4 miles downhill. All the walks I am planning to do may be found by clicking on Details, then the links. Note the start times and dates may change when the summer bus and train time tables are published.

For those wishing to make their own arrangements and not walk every day here are a few suggestions. In Whitby bucket & spade on the beach, fossil hunting, Whitby Abbey, Dracula and the museum. Further afield Rievaulx Abbey & Terrace, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden, Pickering Castle, Scarborough Castle and York.

Transport

Make your own way to Whitby. Once there, except for the Hole of Horcum all walks will use either buses, trains or the steam railway. The day we do the Hole of Horcum we will drive out to Saltergate which is about 14 miles (30 mins) from Whitby. All the linear walks start from either Station Square (trains) or Victoria Square (buses).

Accommodation

Make your own arrangements at one of Whitby’s many holiday cottages, campsites, B&B and hotels. Please do your research as some cottage owners have an elastic view of location and on street parking in Whitby means no parking!

South Downs Way

Monday 10 Sep 2018 - Wednesday 19 Sep 2018

A number of us have decided to undertake a seventh long distance linear walk, this year along the South Downs Way.

The 100 miles long South Downs Way national trail begins at Winchester following the old routes and drove ways along the chalk escarpments and ridges of the South Downs to Eastbourne, running entirely within the new South Downs National Park

Its elevated position ensures the rewards of breath taking views across the English Channel and Isle of Wight to the south and over the wooded Weald and heathland ridges to the north.

It passes through a varied landscape of protected habitats including internationally important chalk rivers, internationally rare species of rich chalk grasslands and beautiful ancient woodland. The trail passes through or passes by five National Nature Reserves and dozens of Sites of Special Scientific Interest where stunning wildlife can be enjoyed at close hand.

We would greatly welcome other participants for all, individual or combinations of individual stages of the walk.

Provisional Schedule

  1. Monday 10th September: Travel to accommodation
  2. Tuesday 11th September: Winchester to Exton (13 miles)
  3. Wednesday 12th September: Exton to Buriton (12 miles)
  4. Thursday 13th September: Buriton to Cocking (11 miles)
  5. Friday 14th September: Cocking to Amberley (14.5 miles)
  6. Saturday 15th September: Amberley to Botolphs (10 miles)
  7. Sunday 16th September: Botolphs to Housedean (15.5 miles)
  8. Monday 17th September: Housedean to Alfriston (14 miles)
  9. Tuesday 18th September: Alfriston to Eastbourne via Severn Sisters (10.5 miles) - [plus option to travel back home]
  10. Wednesday 19th September: travel back home (alternative option)

Logistics

Transport: The core group will be taking cars to handle the linear nature of the route and to access accommodation.  All additional participants must also be prepared to contribute their own car for transport.

Accommodation: The core group will be staying overnight from Monday 10th September through to Monday 17th / Tuesday 18th September inclusive at local pubs or rented accommodation. However, participants could base themselves anywhere convenient (B&B; camping; pub; hotel; youth hostel; rented accommodation etc.).

We will head home on Tuesday 18th or Wednesday 19th September (depending upon preference) having completed the final stage.

Participants

The walk should suit individuals / couples who relish moderately strenuous terrain, flexible arrangements, convivial company and who have a well-developed sense of humour (although the route should be well marked, we will not have recce’d it in advance and stage parking might be challenging!)

Arrangements

All transport, accommodation and meal arrangements will be the responsibility of the individual participants. Members of the core group will lead each stage. I can provide more detailed information for anyone who is interested and co-ordinate matching car loads (for the linear logistics). We are still fine-tuning parking locations so start and end points for some of the individual stages may yet vary slightly.

Further Information

If you are interested in joining us for all or part of the Way, or would like any further information, please contact Cliff D. by clicking on my photo (or talk to me when you next see me). It is essential that we know well in advance if somebody is planning to join us in order to plan car sharing or in case there are any last-minute adjustments.

Maps: Ordnance Survey Explorer 121, 122 ande 123.

There is loads of information on the South Downs Way via Google. Click on the route link to see the whole route.
